Arabesque for Zola

About

What this theme is, where its design comes from, and what it leaves out on purpose.

Arabesque for Zola is a theme for Zola, the static site generator. Its look and its rules come from the Arabesque design system: the tokens, the CSS and the small helpers, copied into the theme unchanged.

Where the design comes from

Arabesque patterns look intricate, but they come from a few simple shapes and one rule, repeated with care. The system draws its pattern the same way, by rule, from the 4.8.8 tiling: octagons and squares, with strands leaving each edge’s midpoint at a fixed angle.

The fewest steps to get something done, actions that say exactly what they do, and every consequence shown before it happens.

What it leaves out

  • No tracking, and nothing from other sites unless you embed it. Fonts are served from your own site; a video, a gist or a diagram loads from elsewhere only on the page that has one.
  • No framework. Plain HTML and CSS; a small script adds the pattern, copy buttons and the like.
